Hello Everyone,

I got my second “Ask Me a Question”….woohoo keep it up every one! I am loving it! This question comes from Sheryl and here is what she asked:

“Hello I love your web site. This is the first time I have visited. My question is can Certified Medical Assistants Travel Too? Thanks is Advance!”

The simple answer to this question is, Yes!! These positions are usually filled very quickly but are still easy to find. In order to find available positions I suggest going to monster.com, careerbuilder.com, or search your local newspaper to see if any agencies are hiring for CMA travelers. Here is a link of a position I found hiring for Traveling CMAs on careerbuilder.com: Click Here for the Job

So what is a Certified Medical Assistants anyways you may ask? A Certified Medical Assistant, long for CMA, can be unlicensed or licensed assistant who works under the supervision of a licensed professional such as a doctor, RN, or nurse practitioner. In order to get a job as a CMA, facilities like for you to be certified which means you successfully completed and passed an exam to get the credentials as a CMA usually through the American Association of Medical Assistants, AAMA.

Here are a list of some of the duties a CMA performs: answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Clinical tasks (some of these tasks require you to get further certification and depends on your state laws): collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, sterilize medical instruments, draw blood, taking blood pressures, and giving injections…etc

Sheryl I hope this answered your question Thanks again for it and good luck!

Until next time,

Hey Everyone,

I got my first “ask me a question”….woohoo. I was really excited to get it!! It is from Miss Jenny and here is what she asked:

Ok…I want to get started on dosage calculations. I’ve always struggled with unit conversions. Any tips…any idea where to find a printable chart? Is there a quick and easy “trick” to remembering these conversions??

Thanks!

If you are a nursing student or a soon-to-be nursing student you will be required to learn how to do dosage & calculation problems. Dosage and calculation problems are solved in order to figure out how much medication you need to give your patient. You will see these problems on NCLEX-RN & HESI (both mid-curricular & exit). Dosage & Calculation problems are used to solve many things. For example, you use D&C problems to calculate how many ml (milliliters) you need to draw up in a syringe to give in a IV line or how to set your flow rate for an IV pump.

Before you even start doing any dosage & calculation problems you have to memorize the following equivalents. It took me a couple of days to get it memorized. To help you memorize, I suggest writing each equivalent over and over, so when you go and take your test you can simply hurry up and copy the table on your paper from memory so you can refer to it while you are taking your test. I found this has always been helpful for me. Here are the following equivalents that you must engrave in your brain:

Note: mL and cc (said like this: cc’s) are exactly the same thing. I got really confused on this when finally one of my teachers told us mL and cc are the same thing and the whole class was like “oh really”. The reason I got confused was because I would hear a nurse say draw up 8 cc of that and I would be like “what?” it says mL on the syringe….so just to let you know mL and cc are the same thing LOL.

Once you memorize those equivalents you are set. I really haven’t found a trick to remembering them like a mnemonic. I suggest just memorizing them because eventually they start to click. Now to start solving some problems. I am going to work out some problems and explain step-by-step how to do them.

At my college, they have us solve our dosage and calculation problems using a formula called Dimensional Analysis…some colleges follow different ways but I think this is the easiest method. When working Dimensional Analysis there are two very important things to remember:

Begin with the unit of measurement you are solving for. This unit of measurement should always be in the numerator (top number) of the first box of the equation.

You must be able to cross the units out as you move diagonally from the denominator (bottom number) in one box to the numerator in the next box. This problem is complete when you have crossed out all other units of measurement leaving only the units of measurement you are trying to find out.

With that said here we go:

Solve: 5 Tbsp = oz

Remember start out with the unit of measurement you are solving for which is oz in this case. Then think “how many oz are in a Tbsp”? From you memorized equivalents you will know that there are 2 Tbsp in 1 oz. So on paper you will have something that looks like this:

1 oz

2 Tbsp

Now you need to find out how many oz are in 5 Tbsp. Remember the second rule listed above. You have to be able to diagonally cross out the denominator and numerator. So you problem will look like this:

1 oz X 5 Tbsp = 5 oz = 2.5 oz

Then think “how many mcg are in a G”? According to the equivalent chart there isn’t a part for how many mcg are in a gram….right?! BUT there is an equivalent for how many mcg are in a mg….correct?! So with this problem you will be adding another step. From you memorized equivalents you will know that there are 1000 mcg in 1 mg. So on paper you will have something that looks like this:

1000 mcg

    1 mg

We are solving for Grams so we must get our problem where it includes grams. So now repeat step two of this problem. Ask yourself “how many mg are in one Gram?” According to our equivalents, there are 1000 mg in a gram. So you problem will look like this:

1000 mcg X 1000 mg

    1 mg 1G

Now you need to find out how many mcg are in 2 G. Remember the second rule listed above. You have to be able to diagonally cross out the denominator and numerator. So you problem will look like this:

1000 mcg X 1000 mg X 2 G= 2,000,000 mcg

    1 mg 1G 1

I remember learning these things and I wasn’t very good at them. I wasn’t use to the method of solving them and also math has NEVER been my thing. I figured that picking nursing as my career I wouldn’t have to worry about any math but I was wrong. I promise that although this may look daunting & confusing at first it will eventually click. You have to practice them over and over until you get it. I practiced this problems over and over until I was blue in the face and FINALLY I got it. Now D&C problems are actually my strength! I suggest buying a book or searching the web for a great site that has dosage and calculations problems to solve.

Here is a great website I found very useful for studying this dosage and calculation problems. I used it a lot because it has practice questions on it. Click Here for the Site If you are just starting on these problems I suggest doing the Metric problems first.

Thanks for the question Jenny ! I hope this helped you and if you ever have any more questions just ask me. Remember “hit me with your best shot”….lol!

Hey Everyone,

I hope every one of you had an awesome Christmas holiday. I can’t believe Christmas is already over…wow. It is so funny because so much time is spent preparing for the big day (cooking, shopping, gift wrapping….etc) and then it is all over in a matter of hours. However, the time spent preparing is what actually makes Christmas so much fun. I love cooking and wrapping gifts. So tell me how was your Christmas?? I would love to know

Here is how my Christmas went: Wednesday, which was Christmas Eve, I got up at 8:30 am and Ben and I got ready because we had to get early over to my grandparents where we arrived at about 1030 am. I went there first to give them their Christmas presents and Ben had to put new a RAM upgrade in the computer (which I got them for Christmas). Their computer was slow and it was due to not having enough RAM (which is what makes your computer faster). My mammaw loves playing those computer games lol! Then we left and went to Ben’s family to eat and socialize. I had a great time…his mom is an awesome cook. Then we left around 5:00 pm to go to my families where we had the Mexican themed Christmas dinner and boy wasn’t it AWESOME. My mom really out did herself on her enchiladas. Ben and I got home around 1000pm that night and we were so tired. We literally brushed our teeth and passed out on the bed. Going to two families in the same day to celebrate Christmas wears you out! However, at least our parents live in the same neighborhood…isn’t that neat! That is all another story and it includes how we met.

Then Thursday, which was Christmas Day, Ben and I decided to just lay around, eat, and watch movies. We cooked our HUGE 25 lb turkey. We decided to invite Ben’s mom over to eat because we had enough food. So she came over and ate with us with was very nice. I like being able to cook for other people! I would have invited every one else in our families but they were doing their own thing or had to work. Like I promised here are some Christmas pictures….sorry they aren’t too good. I had my nephew take them but he wasn’t at an angle and was too far away lol.

My 25 lb turkey!

My nephew’s awesome picture taking skills…lol me opening gifts at Mom’s

Me…I’m sorry but I couldn’t resist adding the Santa Hat HAHA even though it might look funny!

My Mom’s Christmas Tree hehe small but it works…it’s fiber optic!

Today I was surprised….my mother-in-law and sister-in-law came by our apartment and gave us some gifts lol….they called them early birthday gifts lol. They had been shopping all day to get the after Christmas specials and they racked up. They bought Ben a really nice pair of Nike tennis shoes that were regular $70 for only $10 at Rugged Warehouse….wow is was an amazing deal. They bought me this beautiful Aeropastle shirt that I love for a great deal. They are so sweet and very thoughtful! Did anyone else get any after Christmas deals too??

Well 2008 is almost over. I can’t wait for 2009 because it is going to be a year of change for Ben and I. I think 2009 is going to be a great year, especially for all of us nursing students graduating in May of 09′…WOOT WOOT. Tomorrow it is going to be 68′F and I am going out to play in the sun….68′F is weird for us here but hey I will take it. I hope every one has a great night!

Until next time,

Although right now it really doesn’t matter to me because I am on break and it feels like everyday is the weekend……I do enjoy Fridays when school is in session. After class or clinicals on Fridays I usually try to catch up on lost sleep and try not to think about school. School really does consume your life when you are in college. You literally breathe, eat, and live school! Can I get an Amen from all you students out there?!

Yesterday I got my Evolve HESI study guide book I bought off Amazon on Sunday. I got it pretty fast considering I got shipping for free and it’s the holidays. I think I scared the postman though lol! I knew the package was coming because Amazon gave me a tracking number and it’s status showed it was out for delivery. So I was waiting around all day for him to come and when he pulled up to the apartment I put my shoes on and opened the door and right when I opened the door he was fixing to knock on my door…which I guess he wasn’t expecting me to just abruptly open the door before he knocked. When I opened the door he jumped a mile high and looked at me like I was some weirdo eagerly waiting for her package lol….which in a way I was. He really didn’t say anything after he handed it to me…he sort of hurried up and left.

Of course I was excited to get my book. I love getting packages in the mail hehe So I immediately opened it and started reading stuff. It is really an easy read and the HESI Hints in it are really good. It was a good refresher. After studying some chapters, I decided to practice some questions off the studyware CD that came with the book. By the way, the studyware CD looks exactly like the HESI test itself when you take it officially. I guess they make it like that so you will feel comfortable while taking the real thing. I decided to take the comprehensive exam on the CD just to see how I scored and what areas I needed to work on. Well if you look at my study log you will see what my score was….I was shocked because I felt pretty confident about my selected answers. I ended up making a 58%…yikes I know. So I guess I have a LOT of work to do.

I was a little down about it but after looking on the Internet and doing a google search with the key words “HESI CD score VS HESI exam” I started to feel better. I found one forum where people were chatting about the exit HESI and they said that on the practice CD they would get really low scores like 60-70% but ended up passing the HESI with 950-1100. So that made me feel a little better but still 58%…boy don’t I feel dumb. I don’t know if I have already told you all this but I have to make a score of an 850 on the exit HESI in order to graduate next semester….if you were wondering about the scores.

Well I am off to watch a movie we just received in our mail with Netflix. It’s that Bruce Willis movie Live Free or Die Hard…woohoo. Ben’s been wanting to see this movie…go figure lol! Boys and their action movies!

Until next time,
