I have made a page for every one to look at that includes how much time I have spent studying for my HESI exit exam & NCLEX-RN exam that I will be taking next semester in the spring of 2009. I am going to include what books I have used to study with and how many study questions I have done. After much research, I found that the best way to study for the exit HESI exam and NCLEX is to do study questions.
Okay…with that down the question is what books do you use in order to prepare for them. So again after much research on the web and looking at reviews, I found two books out there that are hands down the best to study with for your exit HESI exam and NCLEX-RN. The best books to study for your exit HESI exam and NCLEX are the :
- Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination ISBN: 978-1416037088
- Evolve Reach Testing and Remediation Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination: 978-1416047759
- FREE WEBSITE that has NCLEX questions: CLICK HERE

I am also using the same two books. I also bought the NCLEX 4000 software. I really like it alot. You can customize your own test and then review the rationales or you can do the questions in a study mode and view rationales right away. I take the Hesi April 21. We only have 2 chances. I just wish it were over with.
Emmi
Hey Emmi,
Thank you so much for your comment!I wish you much luck on your HESI in April! I’ve heard that the NCLEX 4000 is very good. I might have to get it also. I am going to have a whole library of NCLEX books before it is over haha. You are going to have to tell me how you did but if you ask me it sounds like you are already prepared and will ace it the first time. I will be praying for us both!
Sarah
Hi Sarah,
Have you taken the Hesi after every class. We have taken 5 so far. I passed 3 failed 2. I have also been doing practice tests. My scores are similar to yours. I pray we both pass with flying colors. We only have 2 chances. If we don’t pass that’s it.
Emmi
Hey Emmi,
At my school we are only required to take 3 HESI tests. We take an entrance HESI before we enter nursing school, mid-curricular HESI that covers everything that we have learned up to that point (I took that in April of 08′), and (what I am studying for now) exit HESI that covers everything we have learned. I have to pass it in order to graduate this May. So what HESI are you taking now? I wish us both the best of luck! I think based on our practice scores we will pass the first try! Keep me up-dated!!
Sarah
Sarah:
Nice to meet you, I need to ask you soemthing, Those score are enough to achieve your goals, do you think that? or just cause is your first time to take the exam?, it will be my 5th time, I felt so worry for that, but I think I’ve improved my score, little by little, can you help me?, I am a Peruvian Nurse, but I am here now, I mean in Ca-Riverside.
Thanks for your time.
Julia
Hey Julia,
Thank you very much for your comment! I think these scores are decent but can definitely be improved. I am not sure if they are good enough for me to pass my exit HESI just yet. I am hoping they improve before I take it. I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble passing it. I suggest that you get the books listed above and study them. Also, check to see in Riverside, CA if there are any HESI/NCLEX-RN review classes you can take. I heard they are very good. Here is a link to a website called Kaplan that have review classes for the tests. I have heard they are good but somewhat expensive.
http://www.kaptest.com/nclex Once your on the site, click on the left hand corner “Find Program Near You”.
Good luck with everything! Keep me up-dated on how it goes. I wish you much luck and hope you pass!
Sarah
hello Sarah
congrats on passing the HESI
i have to take HESI as an exit exam too so i was wondering if you could guide me a little on how was the exam that you took…..did the hesi book and the CD help at all…was it difficult???easy????
i will really appreciate you input
well lots of luck for NCLEX as well future
congrats once agian
Jasmine
Hey Jasmine,
Thank you so much. I strongly suggest you try to read all of the HESI hints in the book and review the questions at the end of the chapter. Yes, the HESI book really helped me….I think that is why I passed. The CD not so much though. I suggest using the free website nclex 3500 or using the Saunders Book for practice questions. Overall, I would say the test was in between easy and hard. It wasn’t as hard as I thought I would be. Also, when you do the HESI test practice questions on the CD don’t let your scores get you down. I was making like 50-60% on them and I was like OMG I’m going to fail lol. But the practice questions on the CD are a lot harder than the actual test. I think in order for you to prepare is to read the HESI hints in the book. They helped so much!! I wish you much luck and check out my HESI study log on the right side bar to see how I prepared. Keep me up-dated
Sarah
Hello Sarah
Thank you for replying
Hi Sarah,
Hope u remember me….i passed my hesi this time…so happy and congrats to u! How wud u prepare urself from now onwards for ur nclex? Can u apply now or else u have to wait couple of weeks after ur college sends the paper work. Really appreciate ur updates.
Leena
congratulations!!!! i too will be taking exit HESI…ours is on the 13th. i am really really scared because i have not been practicing like you do. i had med/surg and psych this sem and role synthesis too but its not a reason to not try 100 questions a day like you did.
Hey Marsxp,
Thanks for your comment. I wish you much luck on the HESI on the 13th. I really didn’t have a lot of psych questions on my exit but I did on med. surg. I would try to get in as many questions as you can. I felt like it really helped me because I seem many of the same type of questions on my exit. Good luck and keep me up-dated. I swear it really wasn’t that bad!
Sarah
Hey Leena,
Of course I remember you lol..CONGRATS!! I was thinking about you and was wondering how everything turned out and I’m so HAPPY the end result was a success. I knew that praying would help you out. In order to prepare myself for NCLEX I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing but I’m taking about 2 weeks off of NCLEX questions. I need a break! I’m actually turning in my papers tomorrow to get myself ready for NCLEX and my school is helping with it. Thanks for keeping me updated. Congrats again girl!
Sarah
hello Sarah
just wanted to let you know that i passed my HESI exams thanks for guiding me
Jasmine
Hello Sarah,
I’ve been keeping up with your blog. You have a lot of great tips. For some reasons, the NCLEX 3500 link is not working anymore. I guess I have to buy one for myself, because I’m going to take my exit HESI in a couple months. I think I have to try to study like you did. Thanks.
Angie,
It excites me that people keep up with my blog….it makes me feel special hehe. Good luck on your HESI. As long as you study you will ace it. Yeah, that NCLEX 3500 website does that sometime. It was down about 2 months ago and then it came back up so keep checking it out. Keep me posted on how you do. I’ll be praying for you!
Sarah
Sarah,
I stumbled upon your website when I did a Google search for “Evolve HESI”. Your study log is quite spectacular and it seems like you studied A LOT.
I am in a BSN program and just finished my first year of nursing school. I am an A/B student (was an A student before nursing school), but I am struggling with the HESI.
At my school, we get 3 chances to pass (have to make 850 or better) and after the 3rd try we are expelled from the college of nursing. I took my first HESI last week and made an 806.
I feel like two tests in my educational career have eluded me to a point that I could not make the grade I wanted or felt like I deserved: ACT and HESI. It’s really hard to deal with because since I passed all of the theory and clinical courses, I feel like the HESI should not be such a problem for me.
I do not want to fail it again. I’m afraid if I have to take it the 3rd time, I will definitely fail it because my nerves will send me into overdrive.
I’m currently using HESI NCLEX-RN Review (it was on our booklist for school), but it was published in 2005-2006. I feel like I might need to dish out the extra cash and buy a newer version (maybe that blue and white one listed on your website). What do you think? Is there anything else I could be using to study? I am also using the NCLEX 3500 website. The link stopped working for me altogether and I ended up getting a second link from a friend, which I will post in case anyone needs it.

Sorry this post is so long, I guess you can tell I am stressed out… lol. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Elizabeth,
First of all thanks for your kind words
Also, thank you so much for the updated link! You are the woman! You have no idea how many of my readers you will make super happy because that other link has been down for about a month now. I will update the link now. Here is my advice on HESI: First don’t beat yourself up over failing the first time. Many people fail the first time….its a very hard test. I have heard its harder than your state board test. Also, 806 isn’t that bad and you only need several more points to get a 850….now if you who have made in the low 700s or 600s I would say worry but the fact you are so close says a lot. You need to buy the new verison of the book. I swear by that book for HESI. My advice is to fully read all of the HESI hints and the end of the chapter questions. When you are studying the hints and reading the end of the chapter questions really try to understand its concept. Also, don’t fool much with the terrible practice CD it comes with. It killed my self confidence lol because I would scored like 50%. I literally read that book from front to back. I mainly concentrated on the following areas: Med. surgical, Peds, and OB. Glad I did because that is what was mainly on it.
Then you need to still practice questions. I recommend practicing from the NCLEX 3500 website and using the Saunders Comprehensive NCLEX review book….its a blue book. Practice 100 questions a day until the test day. Don’t study the day before…all you will do is stress yourself out. Also, the HESI doesn’t tell you how smart you are or if you will be a good nurse. It is just a silly standardized test that nursing schools use to gauge their students and stress them out LOL.
Elizabeth good luck. I say dust yourself off, study hard, and ace it the second time. Thanks for your question and for visiting my blog!
Sarah
Thank you for your encouragement! My family and friends are telling me the same thing: Don’t give up and I will pass on this 2nd try. I am trying to be positive.
I went and bought the new HESI book and my friend had the Saunders book/CD already so she let me install it onto my laptop. I’m on Chapter 3 of the HESI book and taking Saunders practice questions as I go.
Something kind of funny: In the beginning of the HESI book it talks about getting rid of negative people in your life. I’m my own worst critic and I read that and thought “Now how am I supposed to get rid of myself???” Lol.
I’m working on being more positive, it’s just something that doesn’t come to you overnight, though.
Anyways, June 25th will be the day of reckoning!
I’m praying for ya and good luck, Elizabeth!
Your blog is awesome! Thanks for all of the great information! My husband and I are both pre-nursing students so reading your blog has been very helpful. These tests really sound like they freak a lot of students out. I am so glad that you have shared your experiences with them. I feel like such a newbie, but I am so driven to learn as much as I can before I even begin my nursing classes and clinicals. Congrats on your graduation by the way and good luck with your NCLEX!
Lori,
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! That is awesome both you and your husband are nursing students…..wow I wish my husband went with me to nursing school. That is what I would call a great study partner. I’m very glad I can help you two out. Yeah, those tests do seem to freak students out but once they are over we are usually like “oh that wasn’t that bad” lol. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed on the NCLEX. It was good hearing from you!
Sarah

Today I took my 3rd HESI. Worse score I have made.

ERI score 69 –
I am not sure now what to do
Ordered the HESI Book and study between the second and third test and my scores dropped.
Oh Well
Jasmine,
That is so cool we are taking our NCLEX around the same time…..that is how it was for the HESI. I hope we both pass. Meds. Publishing is something through my job that they have purchased to let team members use. You can purchase it through medspub.com…its called the NCLEX-RN review. I get to use it for free. It is a great website. Good luck girl!! We are so close to becoming RNs….woohoo!
Sarah
Linda,
I’m sorry to hear about your situation. The HESI is really hard. It takes some people 5 to 6 times to pass it. I’ve heard NCLEX is easier…..I hope anyways. Good luck to you and keep trying and practicing questions!
Sarah

Lily,
I’m great and thanks for your comment. My exam did go well….I passed woohoo! To get your results you go to the pearsonvue website and click on my account and sign in. There you will be able to get your results. Good luck!
Sarah
Congrats on passing the NCLEX!! Im a new grad from an ADN program that will be taking the test soon. I did well on HESI and am currently studying for my NCLEX which will be on July 7th. I just want to get the test over with!!! Congrats once again!!!
Sarah,
Today was my 2nd HESI exam. So, did I pass or fail? Well, I’m very happy to report that I passed with a 982. I did exactly what you told me to do. I did 2500 practice questions using a combination of NCLEX 3500, Saunders practice CD, HESI practice CD, and ATI (my school is moving over to ATI next year instead of HESI, so my teacher wanted us to try studying with that.) I also read the HESI hints in the NCLEX HESI review book that you told me to get. I’m so excited!!! I finally get to have a summer and don’t have to spend every waking moment doing practice questions. Next year with ATI, if you don’t pass you just do remediation… which means no more having to worry about if I will get kicked out of Nursing school or not. YAAAAAAAY!
P.S. For anyone still trying to pass HESI, read Sarah’s logs and follow her instructions exactly. You WILL pass.
Congrats Elizabeth…..thank you so much for your kind words and I’m glad I was able to help you! I wish you much success with your nursing career!
Sarah
