Hey Everyone,

I received another “ask me a question” and this question comes from Allie and here is what she asked:

“First off i just want to say that you are an inspiration haha. For as long as i can remember i’ve wanted to be a nurse. but to be honest im absolutely terrified of nursing school. I am by no means a human genius and i am worried that i will not have what it takes to finish nursing school. Everywhere i go people tell me good luck it’s almost impossibly hard, that i will have no life once school begins that i can kiss me relationship with my boyfriend and friends goodbye. So i guess what i’m asking is if all this is really true? And another question i had was how much time do you spend each week studying. this may be a silly question but the more i know the more i feel prepared to take this on. Thank You so much! i wish you the best in everything!”

Allie, thanks for your question! This is really a GREAT question and something that many soon to be nursing students wonder. Nursing school does have the reputation for being hard and that is probably why you keep hearing from everyone it is hard. Yes, it is hard but it is not impossibly hard and you by no means have to be a human genius to get through it. I am just an average person with no special genius brains (wish I had some) and I have almost got through it. I actually have only 2 more weeks until I graduate. So Allie, if I can get through nursing school I think any one can lol. Plus if you have the want to be a nurse you are definitely already set on the right path of succeeding.

Now about a social life: YES you can still have a social life that includes friends, family, and boyfriend/husband and still pass nursing school. However, you will have to learn how to manage your time wisely. As with getting any degree in college other than a nursing degree you have to dedicate some time to studying. You will have to take a couple of hours out of your day to do projects, write papers, and study for tests but once you are done with it you can use the other hours to do what you like doing. Remember there are 24 hours in a day minus 8 you spend sleeping….so you can manage to have social time and school time. I suggest getting a planner to help you plan everything out.

Since I’m in my last semester of nursing school I don’t spend that much time studying expect for when I’m studying for my boards. I studied a lot more during the earlier semesters of nursing school. When I did have to study a lot I probably studied 5 days out of a 7 day week averaging around 4 hours a day. Then on the weekends I rested and avoid anything that had anything to do with school.

I promise nursing school is not as bad as everyone says it is. I had the same thing told to me when I was a Senior in high school fixing to start my freshmen year of college. It stressed me out but I ignored them and gave it my best shot. You sound like you really want to be a nurse and I say go for it and do your best. You don’t have to be perfect. Just study hard and learn how to manage your time and you will do fine!

Hey Every one,

I’m FINALLY back and will be making a personal post some time later today. First I have to get all my “ask me a questions” answered. I have many of them. This question is from Ajoa and here what was asked:

“Hi its my first time on your site. Congratulations. Are you about to take the rn state board? well I am an rn certified in uk. I have done the accreditation and i only have to sit for the nclex rn exams.
i live in Charlotte. I have tried once in the pst 3 year but failed.I am just stuck. I uk, we specialize and i specialized in psychiatry. Am stuck because yours is more of general nursing and i just don’t know what to do. Please help. Thanks for reading.”

Ajoa thanks for your question. That is awesome you are already licensed in the United Kingdom and your speciality is psych. I have heard that many of the international students have a tough time trying to pass the NCLEX-RN….so you are not alone.

I think the problem with the test is that it is only given in the English language and this makes it hard for people whose primary language isn’t English. You are correct the NCLEX is more generalized which makes it where you have to know almost everything about ever field such as pschy, OB, med. surgical, Peds, and Geriatrics.

Here are my two suggestions: First, get the best NCLEX-RN study book out there and develop a study plan for yourself. Practice 100 questions daily and read chapters out of the NCLEX book. Kaplan and Saunders are awesome books. Second sign up for a NCLEX-RN review class through Kaplan. Go to Kaplan website and see if they hold any classes in your area, Charlotte. These NCLEX review classes are suppose to be the best. Plus it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try.
